Traditional Thai theater and dance

Thailand has long been famous for its culture of beauty and grace. Among the popular aspects is its dance. Thai Dance is admired for its gracefully beautiful movements, dazzling colored costumes, calm rhythm and glowing presence. The dance pose is Thailand's most spectacular art figure, like other Asian traditional forms. Thai dance is officially called "Fawn Thai." With many variations based on its cultural past, Fawn Thai is generally presented by 4-6 pairs of dancers. The number varies according to the occasion being celebrated. On State occasions, dancers count to the hundreds, bedecked in radiant costumes rich in color and design.

Classical and folk are the two major categories of Thai dance. Thai Classical Dance appears like a wheat field or flowers, gently bending and swaying in sync. Classical dancers are usually called upon to perform before royals and nobility for entertainment or relaxation. The essence of classical movements and form has remained and is still passed on in every dance school in Thailand today.

Among the popular or famous of Thai dances is the "Fawn Leb" dance, colloquially known as the fingernail dance. Here, five pairs of female dancers don finger stalls made of flattened and polished brass as part of their costumes. Fifteen centimeters long, these "fingernails" provide a pleasing extension to agile fingers, and have been so designed to highlight the supple hand movements and forms of Classical dance.

The "Fawn Tian" or Candle Dance, another of the famous classical dances, is performed at night. The four pairs of dancers form an inverted V and accent the sparkling candles which each dancer holds between forefinger and thumb. Their movements are executed with short steps and gentle forms and impressive swaying of the shoulders and upper torso. This dance has been adapted and performed in many countries worldwide.

Thai dances are unique, spectacular and beautifully amazing. Many, if not all, of Thailand's tourists seek out and enjoy watching these dances with the kaleidoscopic costumes and refined elegance of movements associated with Thai dance. Visitors to Thailand almost always specify dance performances as an important part of their itinerary to satisfy their pleasure in the exquisite dance routines.

take many forms. The most accessible to tourists is khon, which depicts scenes from the classic Hindu epic, the Ramayana, in graceful dances. Originally reserved for royal occasions, it's now performed most commonly for tourists in five-star hostels or at cultural shows across the city. At the Erawan Shrine, pay the colorful troupe a couple of hundred baht to see them perform.

When visiting Vimanmek Mansion, don't miss the performances there. More popular amongst Thais is "ligay", a lively blend of comedy, dance and music, often with contemporary subject matter. Due to its improvised nature, non-Thais find it very difficult to follow. Puppet theater, which nearly died out, has made a comeback at the Joe Louis Puppet Theater at the Suan Lum Night Bazaar.

It also borrows heavily from the Ramayana (as do most soap operas on Thai TV), substituting human dancers with paper and wire puppets dressed in elaborate costumes. There are regular performances of contemporary theater in Bangkok, predominantly at the Patravadi Theater across the river and at the Thailand Cultural Center.
Performing art

Bangkok's performing arts scene may not throb like in other cities, but nevertheless if you look under the surface you'll find it there, beating to its own rhythm. No, there aren't as many plays, stage shows or performance pieces being staged and sometimes it's as if mainstream pop and rock acts are the only things that captivate the masses. Still, fans of the performing arts can find diamonds in what may at times seems like a desert. And everybody will appreciate the low ticket prices.
